Chemfinder
The Chemfinder database is one of the most reliable ways to convert a chemical name (even many trade names) into a Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) number (a numerical system for identifying chemicals); it also gives you the chemical structure, synonyms, and links to information on properties and regulations (mainly North American):
European Chemical Substances Information System
The European Chemicals Bureau, which administers the European Union's chemical regulatory system, provides a web-database of all the chemicals in the current European regulatory system. For several thousand substances this database includes the agreed EU Classification and Labeling; the risk assessments are also available for those substances that have undergone Risk Assessment in the Existing Substances process:
