Chemicals policy in Africa and the Middle East
Chemicals policy in Africa and the Middle East is mainly focused on engagement in, and implementation of, global chemical agreements, for example the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), the Stockholm Convention and GHS.
An African regional meeting on SAICM in Abuja, Nigeria, on 26-28th May 2004 resulted in a joint position on SIACM, and the 'Abuja Declaration', which included a "commitment to the full and prompt implementation of the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals by 2008".
A report is also available of a regional consultation meeting on SIACM that took place in Spring 2005.
Many African countries have produced national profiles of their chemicals management capability, as a part of a UNITAR program. For details, see the UNITAR National Profile web pages
